Camel

Yarn spun from Camel Hair is widely regarded as a luxury fibre and deservedly so. Camel hair for knitting or crochet yarns is obtained from the bactrian camel (Camelus dromedarius) - a relative of the South American family of camelids. The bactrian camels with the best-quality hair live in the extreme climatic conditions of Inner Mongolia (northern China) and Outer Mongolia. Camel hair also comes from Afghanistan, Iran, Russia and Tibet. Camel hair has thermostatic properties that keep the wearer warm in winter and cool in summer, and is believed to contain anti-rheumatic and anti-arthritic properties. Camel hair is traditionally used in its natural colour, golden tan with varying tones of red. Camel hair can be collected  by combing or shearing, or gathered by hand when it sheds during the moulting season.

The very best camel hair comes from the underside of a Mongolian baby camel. Camel hair yarn is soft to the touch and marvelous in wearing. It has a fantastic stitch definition and is ideal for textured stitch patterns such as cables and lace patterns. Bear in mind that camel hair needs to be taken care of, handwash it gently in cold or lukewarm water, if desired, with a drop of a very mild soap. Always double check the recommended cleaning instructions so your work of art isn’t spoiled. We stock this yarn in raw, undyed shades, pure camel or blended with merino, in fingering, DK and worsted (aran) weights.
